In this crime series, a crack team of FBI profilers flies from Quantico to the focal point of the criminal activity of various serial killers, to investigate the evidence on the crime scenes, compose a profile and try to prevent the next fatal strike. Top brain is the academic Jason Gideon, his more by-the-book operational right hand Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner; the still juvenile Dr. Spencer Reid is an erudite on everything except real life, Penelope Garcia a brilliant computer whiz who gets access to any database etc. As they are mobile, cooperation with local police and FBI agents is important but often poses jurisdictional and other problems, as do some witnesses and suspects.

Family Guy Stewie Griffin The Untold Story DVDRip

Released straight to video, “Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story!” is a barrel of laughs! Any Family Guy fan will enjoy this movie. Even though I’m not the biggest fan, I enjoy the Stewie jokes and bless one of my friends, he was kind enough to buy this for my belated birthday present. I just couldn’t stop laughing, this was just so funny. I was a little surprised though, since it was released straight to video, they bleeped some of the swear words. But it’s still a lot of fun to watch and the parodies are great. I would highly recommend this if you are a fan of Family Guy or at least like the jokes.

It’s not an exaggeration to say The Darkness has looked better every time we’ve seen it. That’s not to imply it ever looked bad to begin with, but after developer Starbreeze set the quality bar so high with its last game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, we’ve been expecting a lot from this new game based on the sinister Top Cow comic series of the same name. Publisher 2K Games has trotted out the same three-level demo of The Darkness several times during the past few months, all of which was set in similar areas of New York City and consequently left us wondering what other, more disturbing surprises the game would have in store. Now that we’ve seen some of the grislier and more stirring scenes from later in the game, we’re more excited than ever to finally play through it at the end of June.

As a quick refresher, the game casts you as Jackie Estacado, a young mob hit man who’s coming of age to find he’s being screwed over by his uncle Paulie (along with some help from a corrupt police captain and several other shady characters). But Jackie’s got a secret that will help him fight back. He possesses the Darkness–or maybe it’s more accurate to say that the Darkness possesses him. At any rate, Jackie has a malevolent dark presence that, in practical terms, means he’s got a couple of gnarly demon-snake heads jutting out of his shoulders that can rip apart his enemies and give him all sorts of cool powers. These include picking up heavy objects with a giant tentacle and creating a black hole that will basically delete his enemies from existence. Jackie even has command over the darklings, a group of darkly humorous creatures that will visit all sorts of unpleasantness on the mobsters and other bad guys that get in your way. Naturally, the only catch here is that you’ll only have full use of these powers when you stick to the shadows.

This is definitely not your average World War II shooter.

Previously, we only saw selected sequences from earlier in the game when Jackie was just discovering his Darkness-given powers and fighting uncle Paulie’s thugs. According to 2K, you’ll spend about three-fifths of the game in New York City, taking on not only your uncle’s goons but also some very corrupt members of New York’s finest. (In fact, we got to see one particularly rousing ambush scene involving the NYPD’s finest that we can’t show you just yet.) But the remainder of the game will be spent in a place called the Otherworld, which is located, well, somewhere else. We’re not sure if it’s an alternate dimension, a dream world, or purgatory. But we do know it’s an unpleasant place from what we’ve seen of it so far.

The Otherworld is styled after what 2K refers to as “a never-ending world war.” In practical terms, this hellish environment seems to be modeled after a mixture of both World Wars I and II because you’ll see both trench fighting and wide-open battlefields that stare off into a murky, featureless abyss. Your enemies look vaguely Nazi-esque, judging from their uniforms, but closer inspection reveals that their faces and bodies are stitched together from disparate pieces of flesh. The segment of the Otherworld we got to see didn’t involve any environmental puzzles, as we’ve seen in the New York areas, just a lot of killing these zombie soldiers. But you will have your Darkness powers at your disposal. For example, we saw a segment where one power–which involves using a Darkness head as a stealthy camera that can climb up walls and kill silently–came in especially handy while infiltrating an enemy bunker. Interestingly, you’ll be fighting alongside allies in different-colored uniforms who also appear to be created from body parts à la Frankenstein’s monster. But again, we’re not sure how they figure into the storyline just yet.

What madness has led Jackie to this hellish dimension?

While we don’t know what the Otherworld is exactly, we do have a good idea of how Jackie ends up there–but 2K has respectfully asked us not to spill all of the game’s secrets just yet. Suffice it to say that Jackie will have some nice catastrophic events to deal with during the course of the game’s storyline. In fact, from what we’ve seen, this is one of the more creatively violent and downright disturbing games in recent memory. But that shouldn’t be surprising because Riddick had its share of shankings, broken necks, and so on.

Starbreeze continues to apply little touches to The Darkness that are fully bringing it in line with the studio’s last impressive outing, at least in the areas of graphics and presentation. More subtle motion blurs and lighting effects have been added, which amounts to one of the nicer-looking Xbox 360 games we’ve seen yet. There’s a lot more we’d like to say about the game, but that will have to wait for a few more days. Considering the game seems on track to meet its late-June release in just over three weeks, you’ll get to check it out for yourself soon enough anyway. NHL 2008 EASPORT NTSC XBOX360

EA’s NHL series is one of the most unstable and unpredictable sports franchises in gaming. Some years it attempts to hearken to its glory days of the mid-’90s with more of an arcade flair, the kind of game you can enjoy with a few buds and a few beers. The next year it attempts to challenge 2K’s hardcore sim sports brand. But even then, the offerings tended to feel “sim lite.” If you look at the history of this series, it’s hard to imagine that it could ever deliver a true knockout. That’s why this year’s iteration comes as a total shock. It’s not just marketing talk, it’s not just hype; EA has finally delivered an NHL title worthy of a standing ovation. Wow.

For NHL 08, EA Canada decided to drop its legacy of fastbreak hockey and create a game that so closely mimics an NHL game, you may swear you’re watching the real deal. To achieve this, EA created a brand new skating engine and built a dynamic AI system. Either of these alone would have been seen as a nice improvement over NHL 07, but together they create a feeling of being on the ice in an NHL game.

The new skating engine is one of those subtle things that you might not notice at first. But compare it to last year’s model and suddenly it becomes clear just how much of an improvement has been made. Speed is completely analog, so if you want turbo, just push forward on the Left Thumbstick and your player will skate as fast as possible. But ease up just a touch and you can see the gradual shift in speed. Put the stick in neutral and you will glide along the ice on your momentum, a very useful tool, particularly on defense.

The On the Fly AI is the real star of the show and will both thrill and frustrate gamers. The AI plays a real game of hockey and never feels as if it is running some pre-programmed scenario. On offense, the AI sets screens, spreads the defense, and charges rebounds. On defense, the AI tries to cut off passing lanes, gets physical down low, and clears the puck when things get too hectic. And just when you think it can’t get any tougher to score, the AI adapts.

The dynamic AI is adjusting throughout a game, just as a real NHL team would do. If you stick to one strategy, the AI will find a way to shut you down. Or at least will do its best based on the skills of the players on the ice. If you play hockey the old EA NHL way, by driving down center ice and looking for one-timers, you are going to get creamed. The defensive AI can be rough. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to score (in fact, you will still have the occasional blowout game), but to do so will require more imagination and smarter play. The real test will be to your skills on defense.

If you’re the type who, on defense, likes to charge at the puck and lay down a big hit to gain possession, please bring a Scantron and No. 2 pencil to class — you’re about to be schooled. Sure, from time to time you will manage to get a lick on the puck handler, but usually being over-aggressive will cost you. Watch an NHL game. Do you see defensemen storming at a forward with the puck? All you will do by charging relentlessly is put all of your defenders out of position and allow for easy goals. Instead, you need to use some NHL smarts. Play the passing lanes. Look for the opportune moments to poke check; don’t just swing your stick around wildly like a blind man. And above all, show patience.

An attentive gamer will pick up on clues that the AI is shifting its approach on offense or defense. Gary Thorne and Bill Clement, who return once again to call games, will give hints throughout a match. It comes off sounding like very natural commentary, but when you hear that the Senators are no longer going to let the Sharks crowd the net, consider making some adjustments. Each period ends with both teams being given lists of suggestions to improve play in the following period. Again, considering the challenging AI (especially on the harder difficulties), you’d be wise to pay attention.

The remarkable AI does come with a few drawbacks. Though the competing AI is solid, your own teammates can sometimes be dunderheads. You’ll see AI-controlled allies staring at a loose puck while doing nothing and damned if your teammates don’t have a bad habit of screening your own goalie. And while the AI is spectacular both on defense and offense, there are still some basic plays you won’t see often — such as working off the backboard. You will also find that the AI adjusts at a Herculean level no matter the team. It’s as if every coach is a genius, every player able to make the perfect adjustments at a snap of the fingers.

To assist you in capitalizing on your offensive opportunities, a sweet create-a-play feature has been added. With this intuitive feature, you can create roughly 70 different plays to match most any situation on the ice. You record the movements of the players involved, so that, when the play initiates (which occurs automatically when players are correctly positioned on the ice), you know exactly where your AI teammates will move. Creating effective plays isn’t all that easy, but that in itself becomes a game within the game.

Normally, EA puts most of its focus on adding new control schemes each year. That’s not the case with NHL 08. The AI was clearly the focus, leaving the controls close to what they were last year, though some tweaks have been made to improve the skill stick. The only significant change is what EA is calling “Skill Stick Moments.” By holding down a modifier button, the left and right thumbsticks become deke tools. The left stick determines where your skates go, the right where you point the puck. When you perform a skill stick move, it’s simply a matter of pointing the two sticks in the proper direction. Done right, you can get some nice dekes around opponents. Done wrong (which is often), you will lose control of the puck.

The advancement of last year’s skill stick is a good idea, but could have used a bit more work. When done right, the moves tend to be an automatic way around a defender. And when they don’t work, you end up looking like an idiot. Some will master the new skill stick controls and dominate with it while others will get frustrated and simply stop using it. But what makes the skill stick so effective is the sad fact that there are some clipping issues. Your puck reacts to players as it should, but sometimes when performing the new skill stick moves, your hockey stick will pass right through another skater. So instead of banging into a body as you should, you slice right through them. Fortunately, NHL 08 has so many other good things going for it that this won’t likely kill a hockey fan’s love for the game.

Among these “other good things” is the inclusion of every AHL roster. Now when you call up players, you are calling up true potential stars of the future. Then there is Goalie Mode, which puts you in the skates of a goalie the entire game. You watch from the goalie’s perspective, with total control. Being a goaltender is not an easy task and if it proves too tough for you, at least you can switch out of the mode at any time during a game. Add to all of this a better player creation system and the ability to create teams. And last, but certainly not least, is the addition of online leagues with full stat tracking and the ability to play 3 vs. 3.

For all of the good things added this year, there are still a few areas in need of greater attention. The Dynasty Mode has seen some tweaks to smooth out problem areas, but hasn’t been given any significant upgrades. The strongest improvement is with free agent signings. Players now take more than just cash into consideration. They also consider the success of a team, how many minutes they are likely to play, and the age of the team. This is then balanced against cash and play time to decide if it’s worth signing. The Dynasty Mode is serviceable, but won’t feel too different for those who played NHL 07.

Also lacking is a broadcast-quality presentation on the ice. While NHL 08 offers up quite a lot of features and has some nice moments during games, it does almost nothing to try to look like a dazzling NHL game. There are some standard overlays, but nothing approaching what EA’s licensed partner, ESPN, might do. Sports games should either feel as if you are right in the thick of things experiencing the game as a player might or need to have the look of a TV broadcast. NHL 08 tries to split the difference.

Closing Comments
For years, 2K’s brand of hockey was a step above EA as a true simulation of the sport. But give credit where it is due, EA finally chucked its desire to marry arcade fun with its simulation and got hockey right. NHL 08 has a few nagging flaws — occasionally suspect team AI, clipping issues, and a lack of ESPN flavor — but it has nailed the gameplay. And really, isn’t it gameplay that matters most?

Aedis Eclipse Generation of Chaos - PSP

Last year, Idea Factory and NIS America released Generations of Chaos, a tactical RPG with massive battles, lots of flexibility and deep strategy. However, the clunky interface, limited helpful information and somewhat weak battle implementation of battlefield control hampered the potential of the game, making it a niche title for hardcore strategy fans. A year later, the second game in the series has made its way to our shores in the form of Aedis Eclipse: Generations of Chaos. But has this sequel learned from the mistakes of its predecessor? Only slightly, with three separate storylines as the most prominent change. The overall package, however, is pretty close to the first one.

The initial tale behind Aedis Eclipse is one that’s ripped from any stereotypical RPG, with a mystical order of light attempting to hold back the darkness that’s constantly growing stronger and threatening to cast the world into shadow. The twist with Aedis Eclipse is that the world is actually fractured into three separate realms connected by a spire known as the Otherworld Tower. There’s a Divine World, which is an island in the sky populated with angels and demons, the Surface World with knights and wizards and the steampunk influenced Lower World under the earth. Players can choose to take on any one of the three worlds (the Lower World being the easiest and the Divine World being the hardest) in any order they choose, but the initial peace of each land is shattered with conflict between kingdoms.

Like any other tactical situation, Aedis Eclipse emphasizes a three-pronged strategy for success: battle preparation, knowledge and mastery of your environment, and sound battlefield strategy. The first part, battle preparation, revolves around making your captains much more effective in combat situations. Part of this can be acquired by going to shops and purchasing the items or abilities they need so they can shrug off attacks or inflict heavier damage. Another aspect of this is based around partnering them with another captain, who can provide a secondary support role in battle, effectively doubling the power of your primary general. Players can also change the classes of certain captains to make them better fighters or raise their experience levels with bonus points to make them stronger.

This is important, because the environments that they’ll find themselves in won’t always be friendly to your forces. Apart from neutral areas on the field map, players will have to contend with varying heights of terrain, roads that force them to go in specific directions or even elemental tiles that can weaken the effectiveness of an army in battle. Fortunately, there are a few ways to overcome these hazards, like terraforming land into areas that are stronger for your troops or building various bases and installations that will increase your attack power or the number of troops recruited to your side after each turn. While the defensive plans won’t guarantee success, every step will help your forces repel the various attacks that are launched against them.

Speaking of battles, combat takes place between a captain, their front and rear guard soldiers and their partners (if they have any). Players establish an initial formation for their troops from one of eight different configurations, and then fight until one side’s captain has been defeated. A player can hasten their enemy’s demise by triggering various skills and special attacks, which often inflict area damage or specialized strikes upon a target. If the player happens to defeat the opposing captain, they’ll wind up with a variety of spoils, such as money, experience points, and even foot soldiers that can be added to their army. Sometimes, the opposing leader can be taken prisoner, which provides the opportunity to convert the warrior to your side, release them on their way, or executing them for daring to fight against your troops.

As you can see, there’s a large amount of details crammed into Aedis Eclipse, way more than can be covered in a review with any level of justice. What’s more, players have a certain level of customization in how they want to play the game. But this is seriously hampered by similar problems that screwed up the first title. The menu system which was a problem in the first title is just as complex and complicated in this title. Text is rather small in some menus, and the way it’s arranged can easily overload your senses as you try to figure out just what details you need at any particular point. Manipulating these menus isn’t very easy either — for instance, while I managed to acquire at least two dozen different soldier types for my armies, trying to find out how to substitute these grunts was an exercise in frustration.

While it’s important to note that there is a tutorial in Aedis Eclipse, if you’re looking for help either within it or the manual, you’re literally grasping at straws, because it’s poorly defined there. The information you’ll find is extremely general, and while it provides a basic hint about what some game elements are, it doesn’t really give you the information you need to successfully accomplish certain tasks, or why some game elements are implemented in certain ways. This isn’t so much a learning curve as it is a cliff, and you’d expect that this would’ve been corrected for a sequel. For example, players can construct graveyards, which will infect your troops with disease and poison as well as forcing you into battle. Is this supposed to be a defensive maneuver or a training mechanic to get your troops leveled up by facing adversity? It’s never explained, nor is it demonstrated how it might work, so that forces a large amount of trial and error upon the player to discover whether or not it’s even worth the trouble of constructing the deadly “building.” In fact, trial and error is one of those things that you’re going to run into, especially with a number of random effects that wind up providing anything from extra turns for the enemy to status boosts for both sides. You’ll never know what you’re going to run into until it happens, and at that point, it’s practically too late.

The same can pretty much be said about battle, which often degenerates into a sloppy mess of less than tactically organized troops as soon as your forces have engaged the front line of a formation. But even worse, the soldiers on both sides will attack at random intervals, which can be completely frustrating. Nothing says boring combat like 2D sprites that are essentially marching in place without attacking something right in front of them. Since your only interaction in battle sequences is via your captain, and that’s simply issuing blanket orders of movement, formation rearrangement or skill usage, you’re not actually doing that much. In fact, you can basically start a battle and let the AI fight itself without controlling anything, and you’ll win at least half the time, which isn’t engaging. It’s just unfortunate that battle is such a major part of the game that it’s ultimately underwhelming.

Even stranger are some of the little quirks attached to battle. For instance, one of the largest ways to bolster your forces is by capturing enemy captains. Unfortunately, most of the ones that are worth having are so resistant to your coercive attempts to bring them over to your side that you’ll rarely get them. The only way, of course, to boost the stats that affect your persuasion of enemy troops is to gain levels, which presents two problems: it takes vital points away from other stats you need to raise, like your attack or defensive stats, and it also increases the strength of enemy troops you’ll face proportionally. This is regardless of whether you perform this during the linear quest or continually repeat defeated sections of the game as you power level. It sucks to try to make your troops able to convert captains at the cost of making them so weak that they won’t be able to defeat them in battle anyway.

While Aedis Eclipse maintains a similar art style with the 2D sprites and iconography from Generation of Chaos, a lot of the environments are much cleaner this time around. It’s much easier to determine what areas you’re traveling through, such as forests and grasslands, without the blurry, almost generic landscapes of the first title. The game also manages to show off a large number of particle effects and impressive animation whenever a special attack is triggered. Sound effects and music are decent, but nothing outstanding, and while the English voice acting ranges from decent to forgettable, at least players have the option to turn on the original Japanese voice track.

Closing Comments
Aedis Eclipse feels almost like Generations of Chaos 1.3: it has more storylines and cleaner visuals than its predecessor, but it hasn’t really fixed any of the serious problems that the original game faced. While it’s still an extraordinarily deep title on the PSP, the menu and battle systems are still extremely clunky and weakly implemented, and the lack of helpful information will easily start to fray the nerves of even the hardest strategy RPG fan. If you liked the first Generation of Chaos, you’ll probably dig this title, but otherwise, your time and frustration will probably be better spent elsewhere.
